Why Darkoogle?

What’s the connection between the white background on the world’s most used search engine and energy consumption?  ENERGY STAR,
an American government-backed program whose goal is to help protect the environment through superior energy efficiency, tells us clearly
.

According to research, black pixels on Cathode Ray Tube (CTR) monitors use 15W less compared to white pixels. On this scientific basis
the website Rising Phoenix Design decided to support an awareness campaign called “Black Back Web Theory”, inviting all programmers
to use dark backgrounds on their web pages.

Inspired by this initiative, blogger Mark Ontkush posted a comment on his blogspot “ecoIron”, saying “Black Google can save us 3,000 MW
a year”, based only on his personal assumptions.

But do you save energy only if you are using CRT monitors? What if you use Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitors?

In spite of numerous theories that abound on blog sites, we have analyzed reliable data and scientific studies.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) commissioned a study which was conducted at the University of California
(Berkeley) and the results of that research are collected in a document called “Energy Use and Power Levels in New Monitors and
Personal Computers”.

Below is a table from that document that summarizes the data we are interested in:

What does the table indicate?

The table compares energy consumption of CRT monitors and LCD monitors, using both white and black backgrounds. It is obvious
that a black background saves energy on all monitors.

CRT monitors: 9% - 44% energy saving (10-52 watts)
LCD monitors: 1.5% - 4% energy saving (1–3 watts)

This is scientific data, not just words.

It is clear then that the energy savings on CRT monitors is enormous. While it may not seem as significant on LCD monitors,
you still save energy. If you multiply that number by the millions of people who use Google you could save millions of watts for hour.

As a result of these studies, the web’s most famous Home Page was created – Darkoogle !

If you agree with our Mission and like our graphics, Darkoogle invites you and whoever is “tired” of the usual “light” version to make
the latest “dark” version your Home Page.

If you want to help us protect our planet then spread the word!
